The township of New Cuyama was mostly built by Atlantic Richfield
Company back in the late 1950s and early 1960s when the area was a
hub of oil activity. The airport and the adjacent facilities were
built for the benefit of the company executives and oil workers,
many of whom lived in the nearby tracts of homes. Since the oil
activity ended, this property has been in private hands and Cuyama
has been sustained by agriculture and equestrian activity, and
lifestyle buyers who love the sunny clear skies.
