The
Peloncillo
Mountains
support one of the highest diversities of cactus species
in New Mexico.
The tallest peak in the Peloncillo Mountain chain in New Mexico is Gray Mountain, topping out at over 6,700 in feet elevation. The area also encompasses gently sloping alluvial fans, rolling hills, broad arroyos, and playas that periodically contain shallow lakes. Many of the canyons in the southern part of the mountains include seasonal springs and, in some cases, perennial streams.
Wildlife diversity is high. Mammals found in the complex include desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, Coues' whitetail deer, javalina, Sanbourn's long-nosed bat, Mexican long-tongued bat, coatimundi, mountain lion, bobcat, and black bear. Habitat also exists for jaguar and Mexican wolf. Amphibian and reptile diversity are among the highest in the US.
Caves in the area also
show evidence of prehistoric use and some canyon walls
