Rancho Santa Fe is a highly desirous up-scale equestrian area. A leading magazine reported
Rancho Santa Fe as having the third most expensive ZIP code in the United States,
and most expensive in California, with a median home sale price of $2,585,000. This
Equestrian Community is located about five miles inland from the Pacific Ocean in northern San
Diego County, and just 20 miles north of Downtown San Diego. Rancho Santa Fe is a
hub for both equestrians and golfers. It is truly famous world wide for its horse shows,
scenery, real estate, and outstanding weather, wonderful shopping,
restaurants and equestrian estates.
Rancho Santa Fe consists of some 35 identifiable communities,
(of which 3 are zoned for horses with trails and
stables.) These elegant neighborhoods surround the Village of Rancho Santa Fe,
are referred to as the “Covenant”, the original Rancho Santa Fe which was
subdivided in the 1920's. In 1989, "The Covenant" of Rancho Santa Fe was registered
as California Historical Landmark for its status as a historic planned community.
All other communities are of more recent vintage.
The climate of Rancho Santa Fe is a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, and, for the most part, typical of the San Diego metropolitan area though its higher elevation and inland location lends itself to larger temperature variations. The population is below 4,000.
Interestingly, Rancho Santa Fe is a stronghold of the Republican Party in San Diego County; however, in terms of political donations it gives overwhelmingly to the Democratic Party.
There are winding rural roadways, rolling eucalyptus-covered hills, green pastures and citrus groves. The Community has been able to preserve so much of its rural ambiance and historic architectural character due to its unique system of governance and the steadfast commitment of Covenant residents. Under the authority of the Protective Covenant, the Rancho Santa Fe Association has successfully adapted to changing conditions while preserving the fundamental goals established in the 1920's, and will continue to maintain them for future generations.
