As of the 2000 census, Coto de Caza had a total population of 13,057. This is a rural community where there are a certain number of luxury homes with stables. The over-all community consists of about 4,000 acres of which 2,000 acres is reserved for open space. There about 4,000 to 5,000 homes in Coto de Caza town which is one of Orange County's oldest.

The most prestigious part of Cota de Caza is called "Los Ranchos Estates" which is the most exclusive part of the community, the most rural, and where prices are the highest. A select few of very wealthy residents reside in Los Ranchos. The majority of the community is tract homes and semi-custom homes, with collections of customs on the outskirts off the main streets. The community is a good value in that large homes with large amounts of land can be purchased in Coto de Caza for less money than a similar home in the more costal and developed areas. Coto de Caza is twenty minutes from the 5 freeway and five minutes from the 241 tollroad to Irvine and then Riverside County.

The first residents of the area known as Rancho Santa Margarita were Shoshonean Native Americans called Acjachemen. This land was purchased in 1843 by Juan Forster who renamed it "La Victoria."

Residents in Coto De Caza enjoy the use of the full service Equestrian Center. The riding center was used for modern equestrian pentathlon events during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. The Equestrian Center boards about 160 horses and includes five arenas and 47 miles of trails in the surrounding wilderness, complete training and riding facilities. Equestrians can Ride their horse on one of more than 40 miles of trails that wind in and around Coto de Caza with connections to Riley Wilderness Park and Casper's Wilderness Park.

Riley Wilderness Par is a fairly small park with gently rolling hills, sycamore and oak groves, and views of the surrounding area. Riding every inch of trails will net you less than 5 miles in the saddle, but the two single track sections can make this park a little more challenging so some. As a wildlife sanctuary, Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park is home to an abundant number of native plants and animal life. Old groves of Western Sycamores and Coast Live Oaks border the park's two seasonally flowing creeks. The remaining land features rolling hills and canyons of Coastal Sage Scrub and grasslands.

Coto De Caza homeowners do most of their shopping, dinning, movies and library trip in Rancho Santa Margarita with all the conveniences of a modern suburb  just outside gates. Los Ranchos Estates is an area, described by some, as place of very up-scale homes with acreage, guest houses, horse stables and moats. Some of the residents such as venture capitalists are said to be very down-to-earth with one gentleman in particular who opens his home up all the time to charity events.
