Just outside of the
more densely populated cities of Folsom and Sacramento, Placerville
is still very rural with strong ties to the
land. The horse industry contributes millions to the
economy of El Dorado County with trail riding one of the most
popular sports. There is also a very active Search and Rescue,
Mounted Patrol, a volunteer group under the supervision of the El
Dorado Sheriff's department and the national headquarters of the
famed Pony Express is housed nearby in Pollock Pines.
Situated above the fog line and below the snow line, Placerville
boasts an ideal climate with four distinct seasons. Placerville’s
treasured heritage is reflected in the historical, nineteenth
century architecture of its downtown core. It is the county seat and
the center of financial, commercial, civic, and government activity.

More City Trails
The Southern Pacific Railroad once had a branch line that extended
from Sacramento to Placerville. The branch line was actually
never allowed to be abandoned and was purchased from the Union
Pacific in 1996 for $14.4 million by the Joint Powers Authority
consisting of Sacramento County, Folsom, and El Dorado County.
Currently there is a group that is planning to restore the line for
equestrian trails and to run historic excursion trains from Folsom
to Placerville on the total of 35 miles of track that is still in
place to this day. There will also be a mountain bike trail.
Pony Express
Ranked among the most
remarkable feats to come out of the 1860 American West, the Pony
Express was in service from April 1860 to November 1861. Its primary
mission was to deliver mail and news between St. Joseph, Missouri,
and San Francisco, California. Today the spirit and memory of the
Pony Express is kept alive near Placerville in Pollock Pines
by the National Pony Express Association, an all-volunteer,
non-profit historical organization for the purpose of identifying,
reestablishing and marking the original pony express trail through
the eight states it served: California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming,
Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri.
